Mornings with toddlers can be chaotic, especially if you are a single mom. A cranky toddler who does not want to wake up, who does not want to dress, brush their teeth or listen to anything you say is a challenge, to put it lightly. As a solo parent, having to juggle this and everything else alone before 9 a.m. can feel impossible. I know because I’ve lived it.
But Mama, I’m here to tell you that your mornings can be so much easier. If you’re not doing it already, implementing a daily structure for toddlers can make your single mom life more manageable. In this post, I’ll walk you through a realistic and simple toddler morning routine that works — even when you’re doing it all alone. To help make your mornings more manageable, this printable Toddler Morning Routine is available for FREE at the end of this blog post.
Toddlers need routine like they need oxygen. A solid morning routine is just as important as one for bedtime. Firstly, having a morning routine puts you in charge. Rather than letting your little angels run free and spread chaos early in the morning, you can take control of the day with an established routine. When you’re in charge, you can help them start the day on the right foot.
Toddlers thrive on predictability which a morning routine provides for them. By knowing what comes next, toddlers feel a sense of self worth and independence. The structure of routines helps them build emotional security. An emotionally secure toddler is usually a happy and pliable one (and that’s what we want right?). With a happy child comes less tantrums and more cooperation.
Why a Morning Routine Matters for Toddlers

A simple toddler schedule is also useful for creating smoother transitions to daycare, errands or playtime. Who likes a screaming toddler who refuses to leave the house when you’re already late for an appointment? When children know what to expect, they are more likely to cooperate with your requests.
The Single Mom Challenge: Why Mornings Are Extra Hard
We’re single mothers. Single mothers of toddlers. It’s a fact that we have more challenges than others. An absolute fact.
We don’t have backup. All decisions, filthy diapers, and shrieking rage meltdowns are ours to handle. We suffer from lack of sleep and emotional overload. For those of us with jobs or other daily commitments, we also have to deal with morning time pressure on top of everything.
We barely have time for ourselves. Do you even have a single mom morning routine?
We need help. Until it comes in the form of an extra pair of hands and feet, we need a plan to reduce the burdens. Just a simple plan that doesn’t require perfection. Having a toddler morning routine can certainly ease the pressures. You have so much on your shoulders, Mama. Let me help you make your mornings easier.

The Toddler Morning Routine That Actually Works
Here’s a simple toddler morning routine that actually works. I know, because I’ve used it. I broke it down into timed segments beginning at 6:30 a.m. Feel free to adjust the timings and activities to suit your toddler’s daily rhythm.
⏰ 6:30 – 7:00 a.m. – Wake-Up & Snuggles
No rush. Offer your little one comfort and connection to start the day calm.
Option: Use a wake-up song or morning hug ritual.
🪥 7:00 – 7:15 a.m. – Potty/Diaper + Teeth Brushing
Keep supplies nearby. Use a visual chart for motivation.
Bonus tip: Brush your teeth with your toddler and/or let them “brush” your teeth too for fun!
🧦 7:15 – 7:30 a.m. – Get Dressed Together
Lay out clothes the night before. Where possible offer your toddler 2 choices for autonomy.
Optional tool: Printable outfit planner.
🍓 7:30 – 8:00 a.m. – Breakfast + Independent Play
Serve simple meals to make things easier (meal prep ahead if possible).
Use this time to mentally reset or do light chores.
Keep a toy basket or quiet activities nearby to keep the little one occupied.
🎒 8:00 – 8:15 a.m. – Pack Bag + Transition Prep
Pack snacks, diapers, toys. Talk to your toddler and let them know what’s happening. Review the plan for the day aloud: “We’re going to daycare/grocery/etc.”
Use a visual cue chart or checklist.
👟 8:15 – 8:30 a.m. – Out the Door
Yay! You made it. Give yourself grace. Celebrate the wins (even if it’s just making it outside).
Allow extra buffer time if possible.
Tools that Make It Easier
Along with your printable toddler morning routine, there are other tools that can help make your mornings easier to manage. Here are a few:
A whiteboard checklist
Toddler “task cards” or magnet boards
Timers or songs for transitions
A simple toddler breakfast rotation plan

Above all, the most important tool is your mind, Mama. Your state of mind determines many of your outcomes. A positive mindset can help set the tone for the day. And who doesn’t want to have a happy day? No matter what happens, try to stay calm and optimistic. I know it can be very hard. But try.
Don’t get caught up on following a rigid schedule. This morning routine and any others you read online are guidelines, not rules. Adapt it to suit your unique circumstances. And please do not allow any guilt to creep in if your routine isn’t perfect. Forget perfect. Embrace “good enough”. Let that be your mom mindset.
Remember, you’re building a foundation of safety and predictability for your little one. You’re not just crossing tasks off a list. And since you are reading this, I know you are trying your best for your toddler. You’re doing a great job. Give yourself some points.
